The area :
"Come
to the Basque country, and you will surely fall in love with
it" Guy d’Arcangues (Basque poet).
Much
has been written
about “Pays Basque” and Basque people and it is a country rich in culture and
tradition. Few ethnic origins are as cloaked in mystery ! Theories
abound
but the facts are that the Basque country has been inhabited for tens of
thousands of years and that its present occupants,
descended from races
established there since pre – Celtic times, have maintained a unique
ethnic
identity over more centuries than any other European people. Basques
have
always been protective of their difference & identity and that
is
what makes the country so particular.
Ideally situated in the South West
of
France at the foot of the Pyrenees
mountains and bathed in the Atlantic ocean, the northern Basque country
has
kept its superb natural
environment unspoiled, jealously guarded by its proud
inhabitants. One third in France
and two thirds in Spain,
adorned with bays,
cliffs, beaches, with forests diving into the ocean &
the Pyrenees in the background
surrounded by
beautiful cities as San Sebastian,
Biarritz & Hondarrabia. The
climate, beaches, surfing, boating, golf courses, beautiful villages
& farms nestling in green valleys, the active social and
cultural life, the
excellent restaurants make the Basque country a privileged
area for sporting
and leisure holidays.
To
explore the Basque country is not only a voyage of discovery of its
magnificent beaches and landscapes but also of a people and a culture
which are
unique in the world.

Entertainments around
:
San Sebastian
& Biarritz
nightlife, surf contests, golf courses (8 in a 25kms radius), skating,
bowling,
parks, Pyrenean excursions, Pelote Basque and more.
The
surf :
When
Peter Viertel (American film
producer) first came to Biarritz
to make a movie in 1957, he was so amazed by the waves he saw that he
told his
friends to send him a couple of boards and surfing has been
developing in
the area since
Surfing
has been more and more popular through the years and many big
Australian and US
surf companies have settled their European offices here such as Rusty,
Quicksilver,
Gotcha and O’Neil. This is not surprising when you know the quality of
the surf breaks around and the “douceur de vivre” of the
country. Some
major international competitions are held each year such as the Biarritz surf festival
(world long board championship) and the Quicksilver pro (ASP
event). Beach
breaks such as Mundaka, Guethary, Avalanche and Hossegor
are visited
every year by hundreds of surfers from all around the world and it has
become a
classic surf destination.
GUETHARY,
this ancient whaling and fishing port
later became a popular
seaside resort during the 19th.c, nicknamed “the jewel of the Cote Basque”.
Nowadays, Guethary is a
famous European surf spot with world-class waves
and becomes more and more fashionable every year due to the surf breaks
and the
lifestyle of the people who live here.
